FreeBSD+PHP+GD install finally worked

Hi,
as many of you I spent hours trying to configure PHP with GD support, in my case on a FreeBSD 4.2 machine.
What didn't work at all was trying to install the libraries through the ports collection, so I tried it manually:

downloaded the latest versions of
- zlib
- libpng
- freetype
- gd

Then I installed them in that order, using the defaults from the Makefiles.

I am not sure if it's necessary, but I also ran

ldconfig

after installing the libraries.

Configuring PHP for zlib and GD support did not work withough specifying the directory, so using

--with-zlib=/usr/local
--with-ttf=/usr/local
--with-gd=/usr/local

finally did it....

Now I can sleep well, 'hope that helped someone!

Hello there,

I have been fighting with getting the same running with the addition of jpeg, for the last 3-4 weeks. I can't seem to get the libraries compiled into gdlib.so before moving onto php. I am using red hat linux 6.2. When you ran the make on pnglib, and freetype, did you make them as shared libraries too? I am supposed to make gd a shared library, right? (a .so?) Was freetype, the freetype 2.0? It appears to install into /usr/local/freetype/include, not /usr/local/include. Is that right?

Hi,
As far as I remember, I just used the regular
./configure
make
make install

on libpng, freetype etc. I haven't tried to install the jpeg library. And yes, it was freetype 2.0, I used the latest versions of all libraries.
Have you tried using the rpms? I had a Redhat 7.0 machine running once, which I think had all the libraries installed by default. Then I used only
--with-gd
--with-ttf
...etc., and it all worked. I also noticed that php seemed to create some cache files after doing a make or configure. Assuming that that thew something of when trying to rebuild, I "brutally" deleted the whole PHP directory and untared it again, starting all over.

i use ports in installing but no luck...why do they bother to put this things when its not working...confu=igure php with gd using ports

i have installed freetype2, and i checked my directory,
i have:
/usr/local/include/freetype2/freetype

and also these library in /usr/local/lib
libfreetype.a
libfreetype.la*
libfreetype.so@
libfreetype.so.9

does my freetype being installed correctly?

i've tried the 3 following configurations, but NONE works..

WBMP Support enabled

XBM Support enabled

I keep on getting errors of:
JpGraph Error: This PHP build has not been configured with TTF support. You need to recompile your PHP installation with FreeType support.

I guess that because i do not have the following in my GD Support:

freetype Support enabled
freetype linkage with ttf library

May i know where exactly is the reason?
Is my parameter for configuration correct?
If my freetype2 being installed properly? How to check this? 🙁
What else do i need to do?
I'm stuck here, for weeks, trying everything out, but just couldn't solve it.. 🙁
