Apache and JSP

I have my apache web server serving php pages currently..... now I also want it to serve jsp pages ..... what are the softwares I would need for this and how do I go about getting everything to work properly
ie: what are the setup procedures ?

Go to jakarta.apache.org and start reading. I'm installing tomcat (the JSP 2.2 implementation under the jakarta project) and it's a royal pain in the buttocks to install. You've got to install the jdk, and dozen other packages, and the installation instructions all assume you're a java expert who understands all the java-jargon in the file.

yeah, go to jakarta and download Tomcat.

To get Tomcat working with Apache is not that difficult, but does take a lot of time and tinkering. For what I needed to do (which is more JSP/Servlet stuff than web serving) you can use Tomcat to serve up web html, its not as sophisticated as Apache at doing this (but saves loads of time in the setting up processes as Tomcat is a doddle).

To get Tomcat working you will need the latest JDK (Java Development Kit) and you can get that free also from http://developer.java.sun.com

(I can't remember if Tomcat comes with the JDK).

Post back with more questions as I have just installed Tomcat.

Before I do that I'd like to know if installing tomcat or having apache serve jsp files will in any way mess with my current setup of having apache serve out php files.
In other words can I have both jsp and php served thru apache at the same time.

Not being a big user of apache, my guess would be no. I don't think there would be a problem - although I have never used php.

Using Tomcat to serve your jsp files should not affect the configuration you have with php on apache.

Thanks Matt, what I am doing is trying to serve jsp and php files together thru Apache... the php pages are served fine but nothing is displayed when I serve a jsp page.... on seeing the source I get the jsp code with the tags and all...why is apache not being able to understand what to do with the .jsp extension ?

I have a few questions:

#1.
Whats a servlet zone ?

#2.
Do I need to have a separate file for storing all the compiled jsp files ?

#3.
Do I need to have gnujsp installed as well in addition to Jserv in order to get things working ?

Can any body help ?

To serve .jsp pages you will need to download a servlet engine called Tomcat(answer to q1) from http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/index.html.

The reason why Apache displays .jsp pages as nothing is because it doesn't understand them. Apache is a http web server, not a servlet engine.

Tomcat is like a newer version of JServ, so you should only download Tomcat, as it supports the up-to-date JPS specifications and Servlet.

Once you have downloaded them both read the read-me's and How-To's in the installation directories for detailed explanation on how to integrate the two.

I have not installed Tomcat yet but why doesn't my current setup work ?

I have put the Jserv patch and followed all instructions but I am not getting any results
All I got was an internal server error... even the jsp.log file was not created... my servlet engine is not starting.... I wonder why... Different how-to pages on the net show different ways to do the same thing which has left me confused.
This is my setup

Apache 1.3
JServ 1.1.2
jsdk2.0
jdk1.2.2
Windows2000 server

My document root is c:\www

In which directory am i supposed to put the .jsp files and how do I map it to a url?

Where will the compiled files be stored and in which config file should I make an entry telling Apache about the same?

How do I start JServ ? or does Apache start it for me ?

Please reply ... I'm at my wits end

Seeing as you have gone the JServ route, i did it the Tomcat way, I suggest taking a look at the documentation on the site:

Select the link to the Apache JServ project, and select the link 'under' documentation for "instructions and howtos".

There are detailed explnaztions here explaining what u need to know.

It seems like if you chose the typical install the integration between Apache and JServ is done for you 😉

In the install directory there should be some example jsp files, take a look at how these run.

As I have never used JServ, I can't really help u much more!
