compiling PHP4 on linux as CGI modul ??

in the PHP4 pdf docu I read that you could also compile PHP4 as CGI modul (interpreter like /usr/bin/per) .. in the INSTALL file of the distribution this is not explained.

because we would like to run php files as cronjobs, this would be a nice feature though.

has anybody done this before? how?

just install exactly like you would normally but leave off the config option that would compile php for your web server. for example if you use the directive --with-apache or --with-apxs just leave that bit out and run make & make install just like you normally would.
