.htaccess not working

Hi, I've set up an Apache with PHP as a module of it, and I'm trying to protect a directory with .htaccess, but it doesn't seem to work.
I've acomplished this task successfully on other systems.
Is there any .configure option I should set to make it work?

Check the AllowOverride directive for the path the .htaccess is in.
