phpinfo() doesn't reflect php.ini change

I'm running PHP 4.0.2 (mod_php, not cgi) with Apache 1.3.14 on RH6.0.

I have made changes to the php.ini file, but they do not have any affect on PHP's operation or the output of phpinfo(). What do I need to do for the changes to take effect? Recompile? :-(

BTW, I have stopped and restarted apache. Same result.

stop and restart your webserver. The configuration details contained in php.ini is read by the webserver only once (i.e., when first php file is parsed).

I figured out my problem. It was an error in the php.ini file itself.

Specifically, the editor I was using added a new line character, which split a comment into two pieces. The second piece went on a new line, but wasn't preceded by a comment character.

After I fixed it, restarted the server, everything worked fine.
