Windows 98 PHP installation

OK ... I'm very new to PHP right now. I'd like to know where I can get a step-by-step procedure to install PHP on my Windows 98 machine.

I'd like to start playing with PHP.

What other software do I need (web server, MySql)? How do I install them?

Sorry for such an elementary question.

You should go to
www.php.net
there are documentation materials in pdf, chm or html format for u to download at ur disposal.
That's where u can learn about how to install php.

Or u could alternatively go to
www.php.net/download

where u ought to download php405-installer.exe, which its file size is around 738 kb. This is if u are planning to use pws as ur webserver.

u could also use apache. But i'm not very familiar with that as i was a recent newbie too.

To start with PHP, you need:

A web server: www.apache.org
PHP: www.php.net

It's very simple to install. Just download, uncompress and read the files called INSTALL. Also, if you read php.ini (for PHP) and httpd.conf (for Apache) you can configure it with any problem (they are plenty of comments !)

One further suggestion. I know it's not free, but there's a book out there, "PHP Fast & Easy Web Development" by, in my opinion, one of the php geniuses of all time, Julie Meloni.

It really is worth, in my humble opinion, the $25. Or you can do what I've done many times: Bring a pencil and notepad to Fry's, grab the book and go to their cafe. Spend as much time as you want taking notes - nobody will bother you! Really! Just like the library back in University (that's where I went to hide - nobody ever thought I'd be there!).
