mail(), php and sendmail in harmony?

Hey there..
I have a little q. How does php interact with sendmail, when you are sending mail through php. Is it "safe" to use something like Qmail instead of sendmail on my linux box? Will that cause mail() not to function?
Are there any mystical ways to configure php to communicate with sendmail when the command is invoked, or does the system look this up by itself?
