newbiee without a clue. please help

hi,
ive just downloaded this php4.0.5win32 and tryin to install on my computer (wind98) and tryin to learn something to enhanced my website (hosted on indigos.net i think they use apache webserver and support php) but when tryin to install to my computer, on the readme file/ instal.txt it said; 1. Stop the Apache Webserver. Edit the httpd.conf and put in these lines, modified to your environment: i cant seems to find the httpd.conf file. where is it? and what is this aboutstop the apache webserver`? should i have apache on my system too?
please bare with me, i have no expirience with unix program/system and database related programs (but im willing to learn...)

You need a web server, apache or otherwise.
Get that working and then install php.

I think you should get php-triad for windows: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad/
--> this will install apache, php and mysql at once. php itself (without any webserver) is somehow useless.

okay, i will install those. but one more question im not quite clear..
when i install this apache and mysql thing, will this turns my PC into a web server? because all i want to do is to make/learn to make php script for my homepage.

yes, apache, badblue or xitami will all turn your machine into a web server,all are pretty small, don't worry about size or performance hit. You won't get to really experiment with PHP very well wo/a server, so this is probably a needed step for you.

As others have already stated, yes, you need web server software. If you are only wanting a development and testing environment on your Win98 system, Personal Web Server will meet your needs. It comes bundled with Win98SE (and maybe Win98 -- not SE).

I'm doing some development work in a similar environment, but the site is actually served with apache.

To install PWS, search for "PWS" or "personal web server" in the Windows help.

how do i shut down/restart apache? bacause hen i just close it on the X mark on the window and then when i start it up again, thers a mesage;

what is this? how to shut it down? or should i just keep it running even if im shutting down my machine?

when you install apache there should be a thing added to your start menu, e.g. Apache Group or something like that, there should be a start apache stop apache option thing in there.

or if you are starting apache form dos, you can shut it down with the following command

apache -k shutdown

i think thats it, make sure you are in the correct dir (c:\apache\bin or whereever you have apache installed) when running that command or it will do nothing

In my case the problem was with the combination of IE6 and PHP 4.1.1
They don't like each other 😉

Solutions:
Revert IE to 5.x
or
Revert PHP to 4.0.6

I have chosen the second one.
