php file extension

I have just installed Apache 1.3.20 along with PHP 4.0.5 on windows 98. The PHP and Apache start ok and run as a console. The problem being is that windows does not reconise the .php extension. I have tried adding it through View Type but with no joy.

The out come of this is that any HTML doc with PHP tags only displays the standard HTML. If you use <? phpinfo() ?> there is nothing displayed. If the document is saved with .php extesion I am asked what program I would like to open the file with.

Any help please.

1. Edit httpd.conf
2. Add this line:
   AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml .php3
3. Restart Webserver

As you state the solution you have offered is well documented. Already have the lines in conf file.

Any ideas.

How do you try to open the php document? Don't forget to access it ALWAYS via webserver: http://localhost/myphpfile.php

Double-Click on *.php-files is useless...

EURAKA, found problem. I should learn to read what I type in and not just look.

Problem was on the AddType application/x-httpd-php lines, forsome reason I had put php4.
