Error connecting to mysql.sockl

Okay, having finally got PHP4 working, I'm trying to connect to a database in mysql, but I keep getting the error:

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in
/home/na/public_html/index.php on line 2

mysqld is running (ps says it is and I can connect to it with "mysql -p" ) but mysql.sock doesn't exist (find / -name mysql.sock returns nothing)

This is all under Debian (Woody).

Check if the socket is being removed. Your box may be running a cron job that removes temporary files in /tmp now and then. In any case you might want to move the socket file to your data directory by changing the following lines in /etc/my.cnf:

[mysqld]
socket=/usr/local/var/mysql.sock

[client]
socket=/usr/local/var/mysql.sock
