PHP4 won't touch .php3 files

I just compiled and installed php4.0.5 (will do 4.0.6 after posting), and installed it as an apache DSO (--with-apxs).

All well and good, but it refuses to touch .php3 files (e.g. showpage.php3). No problem with .php files; so if I rename all my scripts it works - but I don't want to rename all my scripts...

How can I make php4 read .php AND .php3 files?

you have to go to the httpd.conf file for your apache installation and add an "AddType" direction to parse php3 files as a php file...

Basically look for the AddType that processes your php files, copy it and change php to php3

OK, I tried that - now it ignores .php3 AND .php files...

I shall temporarily return to .php, I think...

You need to make sure that the php3 extension is listed in Apache AddType directive. For example, here's the AddTypes I use on my local server:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phtml .html .htm
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

You can specify in your httpd.conf which type to accept, and you can add a 'also accept' type line that will allow your php server to recognize all types of php extensions.

i'm sorry i do not know what the syntax for that is, but it is similar to what the installation on a win32 system is when the .ini file is generated, which is the win32 equivalent of the .conf.

i have not set this up yet on my solaris machine, but i know you are going in the right direction.

You're going to love this...

I already have the AddType line, but I've now amended it so it reads exactly the same as yours. I even added the -source line, although I'm not sure what that one is...

.php files are correctly interpreted...

.php3 files are not (if I try to view one, I get asked by the browser if I want to download the file)...

I've re-started the httpd service to make sure it gets reconfigured; I've even rebooted the box - all to no avail...

Did I miss a ./configure trick or something? Maybe it's clashing with php3 (which broke as a result of some updates I was doing earlier today), although I can't see any php3 config settings in httpd.conf

There are no other AddType directives in my http.conf, should there be?

Any/all suggestions gratefully received.

I lied - it DID work, but my browser cache got its knickers in a knot, or something like that, so it kept feeding up the file as if it were something to download.

However, there's a bit of RTFM involved here too: The detailed install instructions mentioned "srm.conf"; and sure enough there are my mime types, with .php3 set to application/x-httpd-php3 - so this probably caused the problem in the first place. I fixed it the hard way: Delete the line :-)

Thanks for the info - and since I didn't know how you put multiple extensions on the AddType line, thanks for that info.
