Why does PHP4 and MySQL not connect ?

hi,

i have installed RH7 with apache,PHP4 and MySQL all with RPM files.

Each of these programs work perfect individually, but when i try to access mysql databases from a php page, it gives me errors and does not recognise any "mysql_xxx" command.

in RH6.2, i had installed certain other rpms like "mod_php3" and "php-mysql".
are these needed here also?

What message does it give you when you try the mysql_connect(location, login) function?

If it's the same error I'm getting, it will be along the lines of "call to undefined function mysql_pconnect()"

What the heck is that?
