php as dso module

hello,
I'm trying, without success, to upgrade php as dso module on an installed apache that resides on a directory structure different from the default. I tried to move the libphp files manually to the libexec but apache gives error on startup, complaining about a missing libmysqlclient.
I'm using freebsd 4.2, apache 1.3.14 and php4.0.6.

1st: #vi /etc/ld.so.conf
2nd: add this line at the end of the file;
/usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql
3rd: #/sbin/ldconfig

I suppose this works on linux not on freebsd.
