Recommendation

I need a recommendation on how to install PHP/MySQL/Apache and have them all work together. I've been doing web development on the MS platform for some time, and I'm sort of getting into Linux at home. I have Mandrake 7.2. I have a question. Should I try to make PHP/MySQL and Apache work together as is (they were pre-installed), or should I uninstall them and d/l the source? Which is the easiest path?

Definitely download and use the Win32 binaries pre-built. Building them under the Windows platform is definitely NON-trivial, IMO. It's much easier to build them under Linux, but Windows needs lots of extra stuff like Cygwin.

I'm going to be downloading them for Linux. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I think it's the popluar opinion to d/l the source for the Linux installs.

Doesn't Mandrake have a package manager very simliar to Debian's apt-get? That would be my first stop since you then wouldn't need to worry about all the auxillery tarballs needed for extensions like GD. That is of course assuming that the Mandrake packages calculates all the package depencies like Debian does🙂 Just a thought🙂

Yeah. What you'll find under Linux is that you can only go so far on pre-compiled binaries before you'll need the source to make it work.

Things like LDAP, pdfs, encryption, et. al. are often much easier to get installed if your php/apache/mysql or postgresql were built from source too.

I've tried installing them following the instructions at

and when I go to compile apache I get lots of undefined reference errors. If you look at a different post of mine on here

you'll see the errors I'm talking about.
