GD, PHP, and Stronghold

Hello -

I work for Clarkson University... where, unfortunately, our CIS department is a bunch of clowns.

I recently finally got them to put PHP on our webserver (RedHat, running Stronghold) but I need to get GD support. They want exact instructions (or fairly exact) on what it takes to get GD running with PHP. They have many fears about recompiling Stronghold and having problems, then not being able to get support since they compiled outside libraries.

Any advice, tips, instructions would be greatly appreciated. I don't use Linux enough to tell them what they want to know.
