problems with mcrypt and 4.0.6

Hi I keep running into a problem when I try to get mcrypt to work with PHP.

On a fresh FreeBSD 4.3 box I install mcrypt with all the defaults. I then configure php with it and it shows up in the phpinfo(); But I still get
"mcrypt module initialization failed" when i try to call any mcrypt functions;

I have installed different copies of mcrypt to try and get this to work but with litte success.

are you configuring php with mcrypt and gd? i am unable to configure php with both...

Well I wasnt configuring with gd, should I be?
