command line vs web

This is really simple and basic. The following code gives error on command line:

echo "hello world \n";
functioncall();
function functioncall () {
echo "this is a function \n";
}

I am sure the problem is with the way I installed php. Isn't there a way to configure such that both the web version and command line versions work?

Have you tried this:
<?
echo "hello world \n";
function functioncall() {
echo "this is a function \n";
}
functioncall();
?>

You must define a function BEFORE you use it.

Thanks, but seems like the problem is with my installation. I installed php as an apache module, and Vincent told me I need to install a cgi version before I can run php scripts on command line. I do not have any php executable in my install path.

I was wondering how should I do this cgi install so that my apache module still runs. here are the configuration options I used for apache:

--prefix=/home/wwwuser/php-4.0.6
--with-apache=/home/wwwuser/apache_1.3.20
--with-mysql
--with-sybase=/home/wwwuser/sybase
--with-config-path=/home/wwwuser/php-4.0.6
