kekirk,
It's just not gonna happen for you my friend🙂 Seriously, as of GD 1.6.2 GIF images are no longer supported. I'm not sure if even PHP 4.0.0 supported gif though GD.
Basically, UniSys own's the patent rights to the LZW compression alogrithym used in producing gif images. A while back they decided to charging license royalities to all
image programs (ie. Photoshop, Paintshop, etc.) which support gif compression. GD is obviously an open source project and decided that was unacceptible. Thus, GD
now supports JPEG and PNG. PNG's work just as well as gif and are often smaller. To get GIF support you're going to need to obtain a copy of the curent PHP source
tree, the pre-1.6.2 GD source tree, hack 'em together, and compile it yourself using MS's Visual Studio. Don't forget to contact UniSys and ask about some licensing🙂
Best of luck,
Cheers,
Geoff A. Virgo
