PHP4 to send mail.

I want to send mail using the mail() function... I want to use an external SMTP server to send the mail, not set up a local one.

I haven't done it myself (all our servers run sendmail) but you could probably use the instructions for getting mail() working for windows boxes, ie. using external mail server. This may work, but again I don't have experience doing this.

Also php3.org may have resources on this listed under the mail() command.
