Okay,
Here is the scoop...I've installed the RPM's thinking that would get me what I needed - NOT...so I've been surfing the list and I've come to the conclusion that I've GOT to do the make/Install for the stuff. But I've got one question - do I leave the RMP's installed and go ahead with the make/install steps or do I uninstall them?

i prefer to install apache, apache-devl, & mysql from rpm and then make/make install php. uninstall the php rpm if its currently installed.
typically apache & mysql have everything you need. most often its php that needs to be configured.
