Oracle 8.1.5 & PHP

I am getting the following error when I try to run php:

exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program php because of the following errors:
0509-150 Dependent module /home/oracle/product/8.1.5/lib/libclntsh.a(shr.o) could not be loaded.
0509-152 Member shr.o is not found in archive

libclntsh.a exists in /home/oracle/product/8.1.5/lib.

Any ideas why I would be getting this?

install the 8.1.7 client and it'll work (or is it 8.1.17) anyway, install the latest client.
