MySQL (ive read all other posts)

Hello everyone, id like to start out by saying that i have read all the posts, and seem to be having the same problem everyone else has.

i get the "cant connect to mysql server through socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock" error.

ive tried "find / -name mysql.sock" and the file does not exist anywhere.

one thing that MAY have caused an error somewhere is that i have tried installing like 6 times now, and get the same error every time. (id delete the directory and try again. maybe this was wrong. )

the mysql.com site says to
chown -R mysql /usr/local/mysql/var
but there is no such directory... (please help me 🙁 )

ive also looked in
/var/lib/mysql/
but all thats in there is a folder called mysql and one called test.
when i go into mysql there are
colums_priv.frm
func.frm
host.frm
...etc.
but no mysql.sock

like i said, ive read all the tutorials on installing, and ive followed them all. ive read all the posts on here, and searched google, and read the results. still no luck. any info is appreciated!

First, what is your distribution of Linux? I had same problem on Mandrake, but there, if I remember good, 'mysql.sock' was only on other place. 'mysql.sock' can be named different. It is written in /etc/my.conf. Try to find it.

I am using Linux 7.1
mysql 3.23.41
php 4.06
apache 1.3.20

Do you have and suggestions
as to the name this file might be called?

Almost identical to my install, I assume you mean Red Hat 7.1 (Linux 7.1 doesn't exist as an entity).

I have seen it hide in /tmp/mysql.sock, and a few other places. I would try "locate mysql.sock", it is much faster.

Also you can edit your php.ini file and add a directive:
mysql.default_socket = 3306

Make sure that if you have the an existing php.ini there isn't already a mysql.default_socket directive setting it to null (default on redhat 7.1).

well ive gotten mysql up and running, along with php and apache. but i cant connect to mysql via php because it:
"cant connect to mysql through /tmp/mysql.sock"
i discovered this while trying to load phpmyadmin, and then tried just using a simple script and got the same error both times.

so i coppied the mysql.sock file from
/var/lib/mysql/ to
/tmp/
and it changes the error and gives a "(111)"
after it.

I was able to find the mysql.sock in /tmp. Now when I run
make.install for apache, I get this error:

Any ideas?

I can install Apache by using the -i option to ignore the
errors but it is not completely installed.
