Adding PHP Modules without re-compiling?

I want to use mcrypt on my webserver but it has not been compiled with the installation of php4.04.

Do I HAVE to recompile --with mcrypt in order to get it up and running.

Yes. You have to rebuild the shared library that installs PHP into the Web server.
