Hello-

I did a search in the DB here for XP and it said there were no results, so sorry if this is a question answered before!

I have WinXP running on my main computer and have little experience with it at this time. I heard there is support in the install for webserver - but how hard would it be to activate the webserver code and then have PHP4 and MySQL3.xx running in the background?

Reason I am asking is that I have some MySQL coding I have been working on in my spare time on a webhost that goes down at the worst times (when the baby is asleep and I can get down to work). It would be ultimately more convenient to be able to code and test on my own machine and just upload to the main server after I have the code tested on this machine.

Thanks for the help. Note that if this was a 98 machine, I would just install Webware or something like that.

Also note that this machine is on a cable modem connection and always online. I would like to set the web server to deny connections from outside the local area network (aka this computer).

Not hard at all, get Apache :
--> http://httpd.apache.org/docs/windows.html

Get PHP :
--> http://www.php.net/downloads.php

Mix PHP with XP and Apache:
--> http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.apache.php
--> http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.windows.php#install.windows.manual

Yup it's not too hard🙂 You'll need to make a couple changes in httpd.conf to prevent access from external ip's though. We'll assume you installed into c:\apache for the sake of example.

Search through httpd.conf for the following line:

Just above the </Directory tag for this block, there shoud be something like:

  Order allow, deny
  Allow from all

Change that to:

  Order deny,allow
  Deny from all
  Allow from 127.0.0.1,192.168,10.10.10

Restart Apache.

This will allow clients on the server (ie. localhost) and the most common internal subnets (192.168.c.d and 10.10.10.d) to access the server, but prevents the server from being accessed via the cable-modem. HTH.

Sorry, the Allow from directive in #2 needs to be on a new line for each separate ip or subnet:

  Order deny,allow
  Deny from all
  Allow from 127.0.0.1
  Allow from 192.168
  Allow from 10.10

I've done the same except used OmniHTTP from www.omnicron.ca, its a free windows based webserver that comes with php bundled. It requires little or no set up at all.

I installed the MS IIS5.1 that was included on this XP Pro CD. I think I am going to format and reinstall WinXP (few glitchy moments here and there) and I will go the apache route. A few people have warned me of security gaps in IIS.

But in the mean time I am going to see if there are means to set allows and deny's in IIS and input the info you gave me.
