mysql.sock ...[ Cant connect ]

cant connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'
Has anybody come across this error and how to sort it
I have just installed RH 7.1 and tried to run mysql when I got this error.

I am not connecting to mysql thru php yet ... but at the linux shell prompt.
As soon as I try to start mysql it says mysqld ended
The server just dies immediately after starting.

I have the same problem, I haven't figured out yet why does it happen, so teporarily I'm connecting to mysql this way:
mysql -h host_addr
(where host addr is just my local server)

Well what I did was

1.)login as root and give full rights
[chmod 777] to the directory in which mysqld attempts to create the mysql.sock file.

2.)REstart mysql as [safe_mysqld &]

I think that should solve the problem in most cases.
