compiling php 4.x.x

Ok... here's what I wanna do... I got the source for php and I want to compile it with some extra extensions. I notice that on php.net it says that I have to compile php with:

--with-extension name
or
--with-extension name=extension dir

but I can't figure out where I'm supposed to put that... I've successfully compiled php by itself without editing it... but I dont' know how to compile it with extensions... pls help

Yes - get yourself a set of instructions off the web, either the PHP manual or others, eg webmonkey.com Graeme Merral or Julie Meloni. Both very helpful..

If you look at a message thread "Installation doesn't seem to work" just about 20 messages after yours in this list, you will see one of the better sets of instructions.

You will also see line 8 where the ./configure bit is.

I think these come from Chapter 2 or Chapter 4 of the PHP manual, (depends on the version).

Would be interested to know how you compile PHP source. I am having trouble with this. I use gcc 2.95, 2.96 or 3.00, and can never get the 'make' to complete.

I see you can actually compile PHP which I cannot do successfully, how do you do it?

The first time when I installed PHP 4.1.1, I faced one error which telling me that my Apache was not installed with --enable-module=so. After I enabled it in Apache and recompiled my PHP with gcc 2.96, everything run smoothly. The only thing I faced now is instead of browsing php files as normal web pages, browser always prompt to download the PHP file.
