how to zip a file dynamically

how to zip a file dynamically without saving locally. i do want to create a zip file, actually i got many images and i want to put a link saying "download image.zip" for each image, but i dont want to save this zip file on server. What i just want to do is to create zip file when requested.

Unless your images are bitmaps they would be compressed already, so zipping them wont work much and might actually hurt.

Why not save them as zips in any case? You usually display thumbs of the images not the full blown image.

i know they are compressed already but, i would like to let the visitors to be able to download my images (i mean download promt have to be appear)

Sure, keep the zipped in the server then use something like

<a href="%server%/%directory%/image1.zip"><img src="image1_thumb.jpg" border=0></a>

That way you show the thumb only and link to the zip file. .zip will force a download prompt.

yeah ive always wanted to do that too, like allow the visitors to download a zip or the real file, but dynamically zip it so that i wouldnt have to update the zip every time a file gets updated.
