Installing php on apache not working

I am running win 2000.
I installed apache and it is working.
I installed php and configured according to the instructions. But when I do the test.
it comes up with just a regular page with this

<? phpinfo() ?>

instead of the blue screen with all the info.

any ideas. I know this is not alot of info to go on . but maybe someone has gotten this before and knows

Did you add a LoadModule directive instructing Apache to load PHP? Or instead did you add

ScriptAlias /php/ "d:/path/to/php/"
Action application/x-httpd-php "/php/php.exe"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

I'm having a similar problem under win98.
I'll watch for response to your problem but would be grateful if you let me know of any success you might have.

Even in Linux.

Even when I made a Default installtion from the CD(I never touched any configuration files).

It's not only for php but for Perl too.

If I chmod the .php files and put it into cgi-bin directory and then call them then I get a "Internal Server Error - 500".

Perl
Apache
PHP and
MySQL

is installed.

Any ideas?
