Compiling PHP

I've never compiled php before. phpinfo() lists all this under 'configure command':

Do I need to specify all this when running './configure'? I've tried it and it stops at:

checking for jpeg_read_header in -ljpeg... no
configure: error: Problem with libjpeg.(a|so). Please check config.log for more information.

only this bits that you want/need.

You'd do well to check with the manual to see just what each option does, or you'd be compiling PHP with a ton of function that you don't need.

About the jpeg stuff; that will require that you also install the jpeg libraries. Again, check with the manual for more details.

Yeah - I've read up on options (http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.configure.php + ./configure -help) - kinda sparse.

libjpeg? I've got libjpeg-6b-10 in /usr/lib but apparently it's not finding it. I read there are compile flags such as LDFLAGS - tried setting those to /usr/lib but it still bails.

are you sure the libraries are compiled into usr/lib and not somewhere else?

did you also install GD,Zlib and TTF?

Yes - I have gd and zlib. Don't see ttf (libttf...?) on my server or in redhat's rpms - is it in the freetype package?

I had a bitch of time recently with installing gd, jpeglibs and all that, and after many an early hour found some page somewhere telling me that --with-jpeg-dir (and --with-gd and --with-png-dir) had to be set to the directory which contains the lib directory since it looks for the directory 'lib' in the directory you specify. So maybe in your case it's trying to resolve /usr/lib/lib.

Try setting the path to /usr
All my libraries are in /usr/local/lib so I have gd, jpeg-dir and png-dir set to /usr/local and it works like a charm.

Still, I never specificied any libjpeg whatsit, so I could be a thousand miles off base here.

I'm trying to install the image functions for PHP, this is newbie city, but i need to unzip the tar.gz files into

/usr/lib/ or somewhere right?

cna i just install GD from http://www.boutell.com/gd/

and

the JPG ones from
ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/

or do I need to put in this ttf one? where do i get that, and once installed, what do i type to activcate them?

i looked in the manual but it was only talking about a fresh install, but i guess making it install again will do a fresh install?

maybe this set of instructions may help from stepwise - it says it's for mac os x, but I can't see why it cannot be universal:

then configure php with the following flags:
--with-gd=[DIR]
--with-jpeg-dir=[DIR]
--with-png-dir=[DIR]

where [DIR] is the directory where the lib directory is (ie /usr/local)
