What a crock of @!#$!

For crying out freaking loud!
Two days now of this @!#$. I just want to install a module on a standard, internet-wide webserver. TWO DAYS! AND THIS IS VERSION 4.1.1!

Either I am a moron, or this is the biggest crock of stinking @!#$ I've ever seen. This whole linux thing is a crock of @!#$. Why can't we just ./configure the piece of @!#$, and install it! I'm sick to death of learning new languages, and settings, and reading INSTALL files that are thousands of lines long, and ./configure --help outputs that are HUNDREDS of lines long.

Not once, or twice, but for EVERY LITTLE PIECE OF @!#$ I ever want to install! Pull your heads out of your asses, programmer-people! Just make a script to INSTALL the piece of @!#$ software, not to freaking educate the entire freaking internet in how freaking complex you can be.

What, and Windows has no installation problems? I don't understand your point: you're saying Windows is better for stupid people, and I think at the same time you are saying that Linux is the better OS? Interesting.

Anyway, all I am saying, is that the whole standard system of installing software on Linux is a crock. I doubt any reasonable person would disagree. Cripes, 327 lines of options for ./configure must make Linus himself pause and reconsider the state of maturity of Linux.

PS - feel free to stay on the topics: either about my problem with Apache/or/PHP, or about the sorry state of install scripts on Linux.

BTW...the reason there are so many ./configure options is to keep the software flexable and as streamlined as possible.

There can be no doubt, that installing almost anything on a Linux system is a pain in the ass. There are more dependencies on 3rd party Joe Schmoe's libraries then any operating system should force upon you.

And just because you like using Windows it doesn't necessarily mean you have a low IQ, it just means you don't like being bothered installing 15 new RPMs to view a friggin image through version 1.03.4.67.8A of some poorly coded program.

Which is not to say Linux doesnt have it's obvious advantages for serving files, pages, etc... its just a hassle.

Ironic that so many Linux users consider themselves more worldly and open-minded than Windows users, and then throw out comments like this.

I guess the original poster has a low IQ in your opinion because he's not proficient with Linux system management. That's sort of like your IQ being low in the eyes of others because you screwed up your grammar in a 2-line response. You're willing to toss out personal insults as though this guy had insulted your mother, when all he did was rant against a single open-source project that you happen to like? You, in turn, did not only the same to Windows, but flamed everyone who prefers it (most of whom you've never met). Great balance.

When it comes down to it, you don't know whether this guy could blow you away in programming, logic, math, or sheer intelligence. Maybe it's just that he's always used Windows as a means to accomplish those feats (let's please remember that the OS is a MEANS, not an end), and so he doesn't know how to muck around with makefiles and shell scripts. That doesn't impact his other (more important) skills or his overall intelligence.

I think you'll find that reason is a better mouthpiece than is dogma -- try using it next time.

Here is what I dont like and the way this guys post came off. "Linux sux cause I dont know how to install something... therefore the whole thing is bad". This is an extremely bad way at looking at things. Lets face it Windows users at 1 point in time had to learn windows, go through some frustration or whatever but one had to bite the bullet and go from there. However what if I came in and said... "I dont get how to install something on Windows, I have tried and need some DLLs everytime and it just wont load... Windows is a load of #$@ ". Now what would you say to that? What I am saying is dont pass judgement on an OS just because you cant do one thing on it! If its something basic like installation, then you are just begenning to learn the system and need to wait it out before you pass judgement on a certain system. Had he said, " I like the memory management and VFat32 system on windows better than I like the Memory management and EXT filesystem on Linux." I would have dissagreed with him and wanted to know his reasons, but I it would be a technical discussion and not just a flame war. In other words not knowing how to do something is no reason to call the whole system $@% just because you cant operate it. I dont call a ferrari crap just cause I cant drive a stick. If you pass judgement on something that you have little knowledge about that IS being ignorant.

The comment exactly was a wish for BETTER SOFTWARE.

I too wish for an easy way to install software, why should recompiling php with the gd and jpg library be such a pain in the ass for me? Why the @!#$ hasn't someone written a nice easy one file one line (sure have configuration options there, but document them clearly for gods sake).

I find that so much linux software (not that I use much) is potentially great and powerful, but I don't have a clue how to install it, and keep search for a simple easy as pie learn to install stuff on your server.

If anyone can help me with a really dumbed down step by step instruction of how to recompile php, what to do with all my old versions on the machine (lots of directories with phpX.XX.XX.X on the machine)

all I want is to be able to do the image functions sob

Who says you have to compile everthying under Linux??? You can always download a .so module for php. I rarely Compile stuff.

A nice way to installing things needed???

Try Debian:

I want a program

apt-get install program

My system goes out and finds the file from the site and then will tell me if

I need to download extra stuff and makes suggestions
Tells if anything is going to conflict and gives recommendations on removing a file
Will upgrade the program automatically if a new version comes out

As far as I know windows doesnt even do this. A better installations system?? Its already integrated. just FYI. 🙂

You are talking about GD right??? I am trying to make sure... I know that you can dowload it for Debian... as its one of the packages so I assume you can download it as a module elsewhere as well.
