Help - PHP/GD/Apache on Linux

I have been attempting for the past day or two to install :
Apache 1.3.23
PHP 4.1.1
GD 1.8.4:
o jpeg-6b
o libpng-1.2.1
Openssl-0.9.6

mod_ssl-2.8.6_1.3.23

I've done all but the GD before. libpng installs just fine. and the jpeg-6b libraries seem to install just fine as well.
then when I attempt to make GD (there is no configure script) it always errors out on me around the jpeg libraries. Ive attempted to edit the make file per instructions and met with some success, havign moved on to compiling php4.1.1 --with-gd=path --with-jpeg=path, etc i get an error then as well.

What am I missing/doing wrong?

I have tried several 'with-dir's and still no luck, also, I am able to 'locate' all the files needed

i did this a year ago and had all the same problems....

it is EXTREMELY important which order you do all the installs in... try something like apache -> libpng -> jpeg -> php w/gd

php w/gd?  or gd -> php?

i've been installing the gd library from source before I try to compile php

i don't remember... i think we just compiled php with the --with-gd-lib or something, and it compiles gd into php. that may be your problem.

the lib-jpeg6b was also a huge problem, but in the end it was just a install sequence problem. this was soooo much of a headache. just keep trying everything in different order and eventually it will work.
