What exactly does "recompile" PHP mean?

I have just installed PHP and am running Windows 2000 IIS. I have now added the GD function and it says I need to recompile PHP.

Can someone give me instructions on how to recompile PHP on Windows 2000 running IIS?

You simply need to modify your php.ini and uncomment:

extension=php_gd.dll

Often when someone talks about recompling something they talk UNIX or Linux.
