How do you install a patch?

This is so odd. Everything is so well documented on the PHP.net web site EXCEPT there is no instructons whatsoever on how to install a patch.

I have the latest file upload patch from http://www.php.net/downloads.php but there is not so much as a comment in the files or a simple Readme file.

As I have never installed a patch before (and I am sure I am not the only one in this situation), why would'nt they add some instructions?

If any one can point me to where in any documentation this is covered, I will happily read what ever there is there and learn how to do it.

Assuming you are on Unix/Linux:

man patch

then

patch -i patchfile

OR

patch < patchfile

You have to cd to php-4.x.x/main first.
