i've heard that it's possible to create images without installing and compiling gd. is this right? and help is greatly appreciated.

Not sure about creating images without GD. It's use is fairly wideaspread. As to compiling it, depends on the platform.

Windows yes - it's supplied as php_gd.dll
Linux / UNix - No. Most systems come with the object libraries for GD and it's just a matter of compiling PHP with the right flags.
