How to install a PHP patch?

Hi

I have downloaded a PHP4.0.6 to 4.1.2 patch, but there are no instructions on how to install it. I extracted the package only to find a single file called "php-4.0.6-to-4.1.1.patch". how do I install it?

I know I should install PHP4.1.2. But I don't know how to install it. If I want to install it, do I have to uninstall 4.0.6? or can I just install it over the top (i.e. just configure and make it without removing the existing PHP4.0.6?

I am wondering the same for a security patch...as I have posted above. I tried the 'ol patchadd -d but no go.
