PHP4, APACHE & SSL...

Hi,

I have installed Apache, PHP4 sucessfully and able to write some scripts, everything is working fine.

I want to install SSL feature to Apache. Does anybody got a step by step instructions to do this. Is OpenSSL is good or do you prefer any other software. At this point I am working on Windows98 OS just for the development, later on I will transfer all scripts to Linux.

I heard the new Apache version 2.0 does include OpenSSL feature. But apache.org not sure when they can make it official.

I have downloaded OpenSSL but not sure whether it is for Windows OS or Unix. I could not find a specific OpenSSL software for windows and also a good step by step instructions at openssl.org. And the book that I have explains installation of OpenSSL on Linux OS but not on Windows.

Go to http://www.thawte.com/ or http://www.verisign.com/ and purchase a certificate. After you do that, it will give you excellent instructions.

At this point I cannot purchase any certificates, because my project is still under development. I was able to install Openssl with Apache and able to generate test certificate which is valid for 1 year, using Openssl.exe. But I am having trouble with Apache httpd.conf file. Do you have a sample of httpd.conf file with SSL feature? If you have can you please paste the important contents here, just only the directives that you added for SSL, not the entire file.

my advice is not to bother spending money on a cert if all yr doing is development. obviously if yr building a live site then you should get a cert from verisgn but not if you're just building stuff.

my suggestion would be to move to linux now. it will save you the problem of transferring later. apache 1.3.x plus mod_ssl on linux works just fine although you will have to compile it yourself.
