Hey. I have read the past and don't understand. I have just downloaded mysql.tar.gz got it untared to root/mysql/ then I cd'ed into the folder and typed ./configure it told me that I needed to type in ./bin/mysqladmin -u root -p password 'newpassword' Then it asked me for a new password. Well I put one in and it said it cannot connect to the localhost and that make sure that mysqld is running. Well mysqld will not run! So whats up with that? Can someone explain how to install MySQL on Linux? Perferbly Slackware or BSD. But RH will work also. Thank you soo much in advance.

That didn't exactly work. I can't get it to work. Still says the same error. I found the file /tmp/mysql.sock and its there but it looks weird it has mysql.sock= and when i did a mv mysql.sock= mysql.sock it says that mysql.sock= is not found! When it shows that the file name is clearly mysql.sock= then what is its problem? I need a good tutorial on how to install it using Slackware (which mysql comes on it...but doesnt work) or something like that. Thanks!
