php4 install on Windows 98 gone bad!

Hi, I am having troubles with my php4 install, initially when I tested my install with a phpinfo.php I got a dialogue box asking me if I wanted to download phpinfo.php from localhost. I uncomment the appropriate lines in the httpd.conf of apache, and tested again, now I'm getting 404 file not found, I put phpinfo.php in htdocs. I've tested apache with a simple html doc, it works, In my instructions which is in my book "php and mysql web development" I'm told to edit the php.ini file and change the extension_dir and doc_root which I did to look like this:

include_path = ; UNIX: "/path1:/path2" Windows: "\path1;\path2"
doc_root =/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache/htdocs ; the root of the php pages, used only if nonempty
user_dir = ; the directory under which php opens the script using /~username, used only if nonempty
extension_dir = ./WINDOWS/SYSTEM/dlls ; directory in which the loadable extensions (modules) reside
enable_dl = On ; Whether or not to enable the dl() function.
; The dl() function does NOT properly work in multithreaded

Is this where my problem could lie, or am I missing something here?

Steve thanks for responding, apache 1.3.19 and php4.0.4, I got so frusterated I took my system into my computer store and paid the tekkie 10 bucks to help me, I got it running now, but while I got ya, would you reccommend me switching from a windows platform to linux, right now I'm just mainly interested in learning php programming, but who knows what the future will hold....

Linux rocks... but if your just new to php,
you have enough on your plate.

One book I highly recommend for rookies
is: PHP Fast & Easy by Julie Meloni.

Once you can make PHP do tricks, you could:

1) Set-up your windows box to dual-boot,
and play around with Linux.

2) If you have another old PC kicking around,
install Linux on that.

Anyway, have fun with php on Windows for
now, and when you want to tackle Linux,
shoot me a note... and I'll help you
release the penguins! ;-)

Hello Angela, I'm having a problem like your with my Win Me, Apache 1.3.4 and Perl5 (that does work fine). I followed the installation notes in the PHP package but I can't have it running. Depending on Apache configuration changes I get an Error404 or I see the page code. Here is the installation tree: C:\Apache(apache stuffs); C:\apache\cgi-bin\perl; c:\apache\cgi-bin\php4; c:\apache\web(html_stuffs)
Could you point me in the right direction to solve this matter? Many thanx, Nereo
