Apache 2.0.36 not working with php

I've gone ahead and installed Apache 2.0.36 on my Redhat 7.3 machine along with PHP 4.2.1.

I guess I'm not doing something right because I can get the phpinfo form to pull up fine if I type in the entire url (for example: www.somewebsite.com/index.php), but if I just type in (www.somewebsite.com) I get the index.php form but it's not parsed through PHP, it just returns my code (in this case <?php phpinfo();?> so it's actually a blank page).

Anyone know why this might occur?

did you add .php to the DirectoryIndex in the http.conf file like this DirectoryIndex index.html index.php??

Yes. I have two files setup in the DirectoryIndex. the first was default.php and the second was index.php.

Once I put the default.php file in the directory (had to copy my site from another server) everything started working fine.
