when using Basic Realm the variable $PHP_AUTH_USER was not set but i could actually access the value when i did this
$PHP_AUTH_USER =$HTTP_SERVER_VARS'PHP_AUTH_USER']

http authentication works only with php as apache module it will not work with other servers ...............
