can't assign variables from address

i'm really sorry if this has been answered but i really didn't know what to search for.

i just setup apache/php/mysql on a winxp box and everything seems to be working but i can't assign variables from addresses.

like if i have a script with $test i can't goto test.html?test=test to assign it.

does anyone know what's wrong?

You're probably on php 4.1.x or in your config file, you have register_globals (i think) turned off. In php 4.1, it's off by default and you have to use the new $GET and $POST arrays to access the values. Check out your php.ini file for register_globals and if you want (I, as well as many others, strongly discourage the globals to be turned on) turn them on.
