Configure can't find GD

configure: error: Unable to find libgd.(a|so) anywhere under
/usr/local/lib

configure: error: Unable to find libgd.(a|so) anywhere under
/usr/local/src/gd-1.8.4/libs

I use gd-1.8.4 with the gif patch. Anybody had encountered with the same problem?

Can you find the required libs? Where are they?

Yes, they're installed and located in /usr/local/src/gd-1.8.4/libs

You acutally installed them there or is that just your source code?

Yes, i'd installed GD here and then patch them from http://www.rime.com.au/gd/ to add gif support.
I've forgot to say that i have FreeBSD 4.4

anybody?
