config Apache 2.0.39 without LAN

I am def. a newbie to Apache, and my htdocs only show up in the browser only when I am connected to my LAN. It is possible for it work without it.

/system32/drivers/ect/hosts looks like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost

httpd.conf looks like this:

I know you have to use vhosts but i am not sure how to set it up even after reading the docs, it just won't work.

If you are in windows XP... make sure you disable the built in firewall 9by default it is enabled).

If thats not the case, make sure the compter name is visible outside of the LAN by pinging it. If you can't ping the computer name out sie of the LAN, try pinging the IP address. If you can't ping the IP address look into your gateway settings and your router settings to make sure they allow access from the outside world.
If you can ping your name, then try loading the page via the IP address (eg http://255.255.255.255/index.htm) and see if you get it to work.

Also, try to telnet to port 80 and see what you get from remote.

If all this fails... I have no clue!

I think you miss understood my problem. I would like to use apache without having to connect to my LAN

So, you can get something at http://localhost/ while off the LAN?

That's the first step. After this,
you will have to tell Windoze the
address of the names you put in the
VirtualHost directives, and that they
are found at IP 127.0.0.1 Edit your
hosts file on the Windoze box [c:\windows\hosts or c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc] with the names in the Apache
config file pointing to 127.0.0.1

Only way that it might work unless you
get into DNS. The httpd.conf file VirtualHost directive supports name-based
HTTP 1.1 virtual hosting only, so your
browser is going to have to request the
URL by name in order for your virtual hosts
to work.
