Creating a local database

Hi,

I created a whole database for a company with pages that query that database.

But now, the company wants to make a program for their employees to access the database, but they don't want to be logging on to the internet all the time. How would you suggest I create the local database.

I heard of a program called Apache that could run a local server, but will that work?

Also, once i get the databse up and running, is there a way to synchronize it with the one online?

It would be a nice trick to see someone use apache to make that many local servers. Your best bet is to write some script that reads the entire database to a text file, and another script that searches for strings within that text file. (So basically, just emulate a database with a text file) Depending on the size of the database, and connection speed of clients, that may not be the worst idea I've come up with.
