Trouble with GD with php upgrade

I just installed a newer version of PHP (4.2.2) up from 4.1.2-3

I had GD working fine, using it to resize images. Since the PHP upgrade, the image upload still works, but it will not resize.

The only other thing changed was the addition of mcrypt.

I looked at my phpinfo, it shows gd supported, with jpg, gif, and png, and ttf with ttf library support, same as the previous install. The gd ver. is 1.8.4.

Any idea where I should be looking to solve this?
