php4.03pl Win32 install problem

I downloaded php4.0 bundle from the Firepages

site, everything installed beautifully. Been using for weeks.

But decided to try their php4.03pl
bundle. Followed their install instructions.
Unzipped (using Winzip7) into c:\
but the bundle created c:\phpdev2\phpdev2
instead of c:\phpdev2.

I clicked on "go.bat" inside c:\phpdev2\phpdev2\www, and Apache produced
an error message. Clicking "stop.bat"
wouldn't shut anything down. I had to manually close all the programs (php, mysql, apache, etc.). I tried moving eveything up from c:\phpdev2\phpdev2 into c:\phpdev2, but that didn't help.

I erased the directory. Tried my 4.0 version
again (which is in c:\phpdev), and still works like a charm.

Was there something missing from Firepages install instructions? Some change needed in c:\windows\php.ini, perhaps?

Reading over the problems others have been having installing 4.03pl hasn't help me due to the technical level of the discussions (rather obviously i'm not a programmer). I really love php. Probably don't need to upgrade past 4.0 but it would ne nice to be current.

Any suggestions? I'll post the error msgs, but in case my install issue is silly and obvious, thought it best to just mention the matter first; maybe others have had the same problem.

Sounds like you need to shutdown the first copy of PHP (c:\phpdev) and then need to update your apache config file to point to the new copy of PHP (and the restart Apache).

Yes, that did it. Thanks so much.

(for the benefit of anyone as perfectly clueless of myself, I did the following: 1) created a directory for the phpdev2.zip, 2) downloaded it from firepages.com to there, 3) unzipped its contents into there, 4) launched a text editor and searched inside the Conf subdirectory of the Apache subdirectory of phpdev2 for the file "httpd.conf", 5) scrolled down to the line saying "server root" in order to see what the default path listed there was, 6) did a search and replace on the subsection of that path string that would correct it to reflect the path it was living on on my hard drive--i.e., replacing not the whole string, but just the middle section: in my case, the portion after c:/ and before /www.). This changed 7 lines, altogether inside httpf.conf, the DocumentRoot, two 3 ScriptAlias lines and 2 Alias lines).
