Excuse me please for posting here but im desperate...
I have a terrible problem, im in the middle of nowhere with a computer that has Explorer blocked in the content (tools/internet options/content/content advisor/) and the owner of the computer dosent remember the password.
I tried uninstalling it, and didnt work, i updated again to explorer 5 and didnt work too. I can connect with Netscape, but i need Explorer to install an applicacion that was made for installing with Explorer. Dont have the discs for reinstalling win95 also.. 🙁
Please excuse me again for posting here, but im desperate.

try changing logged in "user". It may be in the registry and it's a bitch to get out. So use Control Panel >> Users and set up a new user account. See if you can access what you need that way.

Microsoft's Content Adviser is a disaster. I tried setting it up on my wife's Win98 PC to keep my kids from mistyping a URL they heard on television and accidentally getting an eyeful of porn. It so badly screwed up the computer that I considered completely wiping the disk and reinstalling the operating system.

If you do a Web search you should find documentation on how to fix this fairly quickly (NOT on Microsoft's site!) It involves editing the registry.

Wow, but I thought one of the big advantages of Microsoft software was that they provided all the support you could ever want (or was it afford? hmmm) in one convenient location...

Also, I thought only us Linux types had to go and edit text files by hand. Oh, yeah, the registry was an improvement over text files, since you can only edit it on a healthy enough of a machine to get the GUI up and running.

I still remember way back when I was tech support for a couple hundred Winders boxen, and how much I hated microsoft for the abomination of a database that the registry is. I could at least live with it if it was a real relational database that I could say, "select * from reg where application like '%excel';"...

Have you ever forgotten the password to the Content Advisor in Internet Explorer? Here's how to reset it:

Run RegEdit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Policies
Ratings
This is where the Content Advisor Password is stored.

Delete the entry in the right window called "Key".
Reboot
