configure PHP4 on WinNT4

I'm attempting to run PHP on an Apache server running on NT4. Apache server starts fine. I've created a text file called phpinfo.php under my c:\apache\htdocs directory with just this text
<? phpinfo(); ?> , to display system information.
When I type in the url http://localhost/phpinfo I get the contents of my phpinfo.php file <? phpinfo(); ?> instead of system information.
What am I missing here?

Did you add the correct lines to your httpd.conf

For CGI Mode:
ScriptAlias /php/ "C:/php/"
Action application/x-httpd-php "/php/php.exe"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm

For apache module:
#LoadModule php4_module modules/mod_php4/sapi/php4apache.dll
#AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4 .php .php3

You have not associated the right file-extension(.php, php4 etc.) for the php-engine.
Or, the otherway, the wrong php-engine.

Conclusion:

Check if php was installed with .php or .php4
Check if php is assosiated with the right binaryfile php.exe or with iis php4isapi.dll
