function mail doesn't work

I'm trying to create an e-mail action with php but it returns an error every time I'm running the script.

I'm working on a win 2000 computer with an Apache webserver.

If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it,

And what is the error you get?

Please open your php.ini file and check for mail setting at [mail function].
It should read something like this :

SMTP = DNS Server name
sendmail_from = your e-mail address
sendmail_path = root of your apache server

Javed's sort of there. php.ini file, module settings, mail function .... It's your smtp address you want by SMTP (!) & your e-mail address - the one you're intending to send php-generated mail from - by sendmail_from. However in win32 the sendmail_path line should be commented out with a ; in front, it's a 'nix thang.

If that's set up OK you're probably doing what I did & leaving your connections closed while you're developing on your local intranet. The mail can't reach your smtp server without the Internet ....

I'm having the same troubles, but with all socket functions.

I mean if i use the php manual example for fsockopen, it won't work BUT if i want to reach an intranet address.

I i configure apache not to run php as a module but as cgi mode, anything works !

Any network function behave the same way (gethostbyname, etc...)

The problem is that accessing mysql is much faster with php as a module...

anyone to help ??

Sorry, Armel, not sure I'm following. Are you saying you're OK on the intranet with socket functions using php modules, you just can't get out to the www that way?

yes and no : it works when php is run as cgi but fails when php is run as an apache module.

There is no problem with my Internet connection as Perl does it ok !

soz, just been ploughing thru a billion+ files via notepad .... Do you have this line in your httpd.conf file?

AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

I ask because it isn't in mine, ergo if it comes as standard now it didn't until recently -

This might be a silly question, but you do realise that php's socket functions aren't WINS enabled, don't you?

Have you tried using IP addresses throughout?

what do you mean by "aren't WINS enabled" -> the code i wrote did work (DID...) on an other machine.

The problem remains with IP adresses.

Hmm. If you look at the php manual it states that the socket functions are intended for unix-based networks & the internet; ie it works on dns or IP addresses but not machine names, which are WINS addresses. But if you're not getting any joy across your network using IP addresses either then that's obviously not the problem, and my expertise ends here!

I don't think the php mail() function can work across a M$ internal network - correct me please anyone who's found differently - because Exchange mail runs on the x400 protocol, not smtp. I'm waiting to hear from someone I know who uses sendmail from a nix box to send internal communications to a M$ WAN & find out how he gets around it, I'll get back to you on that.

I see.... But that's not the problem I have.

First of all the mail function works within a network even using windows. But you are right I do not use MSExchange but FTGate, smtp based.

Then I agree that the mail function won't work using machines names. But the problem I don't understand is why from my script I can open a socket to www.somewhere.com, through a network, using winME, when php is run CGI mode.

Why does the SAME script on the SAME network and SAME platform will fail if php is run as an apache module ???

I am actually trying the same thing on Win95 intead of WinME and the first tests are successfull !!

Is the solution not to upgrade ???

PHP 4.0 for Windows comes in two flavours - a CGI executable (php.exe), and an
ISAPI module (php4isapi.dll). The latter is new to PHP 4.0, and provides
significantly improved performance and some new functionality. However,
please note that the ISAPI module is NOT yet considered to be production
quality. The reason for this is that the PHP ISAPI module uses the
thread-safe version of the PHP code, which is completely new to PHP 4.0, and
has not yet been tested and pounded enough to be considered completely stable,
and there are actually a few known bugs. On the other hand, some people have
reported very good results with the ISAPI module, even though we're not aware
of anyone actually running it on a production site. In short - your mileage
may vary; If you need absolute stability, trade the performance of the ISAPI
module with the stability of the CGI executable.

I just downloaded 4.03pl1, it's the first version of php I've seen that even has the apache module in it (hence confusion over asapi, which still carries a warning notice).

I got gd running for the first ever time, yippee!!!!
