GD forced the termination of my child

Does anyone know why would uncommenting the GD extension cause the browser to fail at loading any php files?

When this happens and I close Apache, php is still evident in the Close Program dialog box).

Apache also takes forever to close. In the error log was the shocking statement, "forced termination of child #0 (handle 76)". God, what have I done?

And this occured whether I tried the 4.03pl1 Win binary or 4.04 (and different php.inis from different download bundles).

Might this be a setup error in httpd.conf or in php.ini? Is so, can anyone suggest where to look first? (I've read all the threads and readmes, added the required lines to the Apache and php config files, and so on). If not, what else could this be? Anyone familiar with this problem?

This occured because of a configuration error I made in the http.conf file that is located in the Apache "conf" subdirectory.

The default after setup was:

  extension_dir=     ./ 

I needed to change it to the correct location of the php/entensions subdirectory in my case. This was :

  extension_dir=   c:/allwebdev/php/extensions
